In het verleden werd de kermis gehouden van 13 tot 23 augustus. In een poging om de eerdere start van school te vermijden, heeft de Iowa State Fair Board de data in 1994 met een week opgeschoven. De kermis eindigt nu op de zondag die twee weken voor Dag van de Arbeid. Volgens kalenderverschuivingen zijn de vroegste data van de beurs van 7-17 augustus en de laatste data van 13-23 augustus.
Iowa's State Fair is the largest annual event in the state, attracting thousands of visitors each year from the Midwest and other parts of the U.S., as well as many countries abroad. After the Fair, estimates of daily attendance are made and a count is done on tickets, including those sold daily, in advance, to exhibitors, concessionaires or children. The final attendance is determined by calculating the daily attendance estimates and counting all tickets sold, including those for exhibitors, concessionaires, campers, childrens credentials or half price.
